Serum Cholesterol

What is serum cholesterol?

Serum Cholesterol is naturally produced by the liver inside the body.  It is a fat like substance and is used to build cell membranes inside the body.

The body is very capable of creating all the cholesterol that it needs for proper functioning of the body.  Serum Cholesterol is an example of this.  The problem lies in the fact that the Western Diet is full of items such as whole milk, meat, fish, poultry, egg yolks and other items full of animal fats.

Any diet that has a high level of saturated fats and cholesterol will raise the amounts of cholesterol found in the blood.  Once this occurs it puts the individual in a higher risk group for heart disease.

Practicing good food choices accompanied by exercise can help in controlling the cholesterol levels within the body.  Good food choices consist of items that are low in fat and do not contain trans fats.

The risk of heart and blood vessel disease rises as blood cholesterol levels increase.
